ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND RENEWABLE ENERGY

Getting to Zero: Decarbonizing UBC's District Energy System

UBC's climate action targets have always been twice as much and twice as fast as the Provincial Climate Action Mandates—and the University's 2030 goal is no exception. With goals of a 100% DES decarbonization by 2030 and a Zero-Carbon campus by 2035, UBC is running into the types of challenges now that most institutions won't see for another decade. This presentation will share the process and results of the district energy decarbonization study. From the options included in the initial brainstorming session to the final 7 pathways analyzed, we will review the energy and carbon reduction, campus resiliency, energy and operational costs, and overall $/tonne abatement cost. In-building tradeoffs will also be discussed. This presentation gives a good indication of the carbon pricing and funding needed to reach our climate action goals.

Speakers

Julie West, P.Eng.

Julie West is the senior energy conservation manager at the University of British Columbia, and has 14 years of energy conservation, new construction, and sustainable building experience. She has worked at UBC in the energy and carbon reduction of existing and new buildings on campus for the last 7 years to help the university reach carbon and energy reduction goals. Before that, she worked as a mechanical engineer in building consulting both in Vancouver and Toronto.

Stephen Yu, EIT

Stephen is a mechanical Engineer-in-Training. He has been with FVB Energy’s Vancouver office for over 3 years and has worked on numerous district energy projects in BC ranging from feasibility studies to detailed design and construction support services.

Offsets – An Important Revenue Stream on the Road to Net Zero

Join Nelson Lee as he presents on the importance of offsets in decarbonizing our future, globally and nationally. During the session, follow along with Nelson as he explores BC’s system and borrows from other markets to explain how aggregating can add a revenue stream to projects on the road to net zero.
