PROFESSIONAL GOVERNANCE ACT – OVERVIEW OF MAJOR REGULATORY CHANGES

In this session, we will discuss the most significant changes affecting registrants due to the implementation of the Professional Governance Act in February 2021, including: Updates to Bylaws and governance structure; Changes to the Code of Ethics and the enhanced Duty to Report; Continuing Education Program and annual information reporting requirements; Regulation of Firms Program and Permits to Practice; Quality Management Standards, including the new Standard for Documented Independent Review of High-Risk Professional Activities or Work; Audit Program consisting of proactive compliance audits for firms and individuals; and Practice Review Program consisting of targeted, reactive audits due to identified practice issues of firms and individuals.


UPDATE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF PROFESSIONAL GOVERNANCE (OSPG)

Senior leadership from the Office of the Superintendent of Professional Governance will speak to their operations since the Professional Governance Act was brought into force, priorities for the fall, and plans for the future.

INTRODUCTION TO THE PRACTICE ADVICE PROGRAM

One of the core regulatory functions of the Professional Practice, Standards, and Development (PPSD) department of Engineers and Geoscientists BC is to provide guidance regarding the practice of engineering and geoscience to Registrants and others through the Practice Advice Program. The Practice Advice Program is designed to provide interpretation and guidance regarding the expectations and obligations of professional and ethical practice as set out in the Professional Governance Act, Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s Bylaws, and any guidance published by Engineers and Geoscientists BC.


LESSONS LEARNED FROM INVESTIGATION AND DISCIPLINE

This presentation discusses the investigation and discipline process at Engineers and Geoscientists BC. The session also discusses recent trends in investigations and reviews the discipline cases published over the past year, and what lessons can be learned from those discipline cases. The presenter will not be giving legal advice nor discussing active investigations or discipline files, only completed discipline matters.


ETHICS IN ACTION 

Speaker: Klara Hillmann, and Dan Rankin, P.Eng.

This presentation is an interactive session in which we will discuss ethical principles applied in a number of real world scenarios. The presenters will provide the participants with the fact patterns of a number of scenarios and ask the participants to consider the ethical implications in smaller group discussions. In the context of each scenario, the presenters will then discuss their thoughts regarding applicable ethical principles and expectations of professional conduct.
